B i o g r a p h y Born 29 years ago in Alabama, the ethereal-voiced Maria Taylor won over her first fans at age 15 as part of the Birmingham duo Little Red Rocket, a rock/pop group that brought comparisons to Belly. When that outfit, which issued two CDs — 1997's Who Did You Pay and 2000's It's in the Sound — disbanded after getting lost in the shuffle that was Geffen's merger with Universal Music Group, Taylor and her musical partner, Orenda Fink, relocated to Athens, Ga., and regrouped as Azure Ray. With help from Conor Oberst's well-trained ear, the Saddle Creek label act Now It's Overhead picked up on their plaintive pop sound and courted them to join. As half of that group, they signed to the Omaha, Neb.-based Saddle Creek while continuing their Azure Ray projects on the independent Warm Recordings. In 2001, both Azure Ray and Now It's Overheard released scantly received self-titled debuts; a year later, Taylor and Fink took up full-time residence in Omaha and released Burn and Shiver. The pair's third full-length, 2003's Hold on Love, released on Saddle Creek, brought it indie-scene raves on the merits of the singles "The Drinks We Drank Last Night" and "New Resolution." Fall Back Open, a Now It's Overheard set, was released in 2004 amid heavy touring. Having paid her dues by contributing lullaby-warm vocals to various projects by Moby, Bright Eyes, and Crooked Fingers, Taylor struck out on her own with 2005's 11:11. On it, she is by turns melancholy ("Birmingham 1982") and daring (the danceable "One for the Shareholder"). Throughout, she sounds like Ida's pillow-voiced Elizabeth Mitchell, but the wisdom, joy, and pain that pulse from her carefully crafted lyrics owe a debt to Carole King and Laura Nyro. |
Leap Year
Save my money
For that plane ride
Horn of plenty
Heavy sunlight
Autumn's bounty
Bread and red wine
In a hurry
But there's so much time
I will wait for you
Growing love but like water
Time will always slip through
I will wait for you
But please come soon
The wind sounds angry
But my coat's kind
Wrapped in blankets
In the daylight
Winners longing
Some are close behind
In a hurry
But there's so much time
I will wait for you
Growing love but like water
Time will always slip through
I will wait for you
Is it in a plan
Written in your hand
Believe or understand
Something other than
Fear is blinding lights
Squeeze my eyes so tight
Could you make a flower grow
Would you let me know
I will wait for you
Growing love but like water
Time will always slip through
I will wait for you
But please come soon
Song Beneath The Song
Cryptic words meander
Now there is a song beneath the song
One day you'll learn
You'll soon discern its true meaning
An interesting detachment
A listless poem of love sincere
Desire, despair
Overlapping melodies
And it's not a love, it's not a love
It's not a love, it's not a love song
It's not a love, it's not a love, it's not a love song
It's not a love, it's not a love, it's not a love song
Oh now the roots are reminiscing
Recurring dreams of minor chords
Metred time
Muted chimes find the beat
And in the pulse there lies conviction
A steady push and pull routine
The cymbals swell
High notes flail into reach
And it's not a love, it's not a love
It's not a love, it's not a love song
It's not a love, it's not a love, it's not a love song
It's not a love, it's not a love, it's not a love song
It's not a love, it's not a love,
It's not a love, it's not a love song
It's not a love, it's not a love, it's not a love song
It's not a love, it's not a love, it's not a love song...
Two
Of Those Two
There was a time two fearless minds
Where we packed up for a new place
A college town with a musical sound
And everyone had a new face
There was something there
Maybe it was the trees
Or the flowery air
Or that everyone seemed so glad
They were there
And we were two of those two
We were two of those two
We got a house in between a homeless shelter
And a coffee shop
We painted the walls until we couldn't reach
I said, "It looks cool this way, let's stop."
There were always people there
Maybe it was the music
We played on the record player
Or that everyone seemed so glad
They were there
And we were two of those two
We were two of those two
And those were the times
The quietest days
We'll sit and smile and remember
Nothing could feel the same
We were so free
We were in each passing second
And you can't sustain
Anything, everything must change
So be thankful for everything
And I am
I am
I am
Nature Song
When nature talks I'm not supposed to hear
I'm not supposed to know, don't I know
We never wore clothes, I let the feeling go
And let it fade inside
I know why I love I know
You're leaning down and gently you say "I want to leave"
Sure you can go but then you will sleep alone,
though that I'm yours
When nature walks I see it in your legs
There's something in your style
In the sun
You turned into the wind and took all my surprise
And like a million eyes on me, on me, on me
You're leaving now didn't you say "I want to leave"?
Anything else get it yourself and know what's mine's yours
When nature learns nothing's in control
And nothing stays the same in your way
It will not return until the season's change
And when it changes fine I'll go, I'll go, I'll go...
Light House
Watch the children sing, but not to be singers
And so hopeful, they still are believers
There's so much to do or say without repeating
And a sad story hoped she would keep reading
Maybe a message or just not perceiving
There's so much to do or say without repeating
So why don't we?
And don't expect too much, okay?
Cause the best, the worst might have passed anyway
And like the light house we watched it spin 'round and 'round
There's just some things
They aren't meant to touch the ground
Bada ba bada ba bada bum bum...
And let our legs just run, no concept of distance
And all these rules we've learned could make no difference
There's so much to do or say without repeating
And it's the subtle laugh that will keep ringing
And what was overlooked could now have meaning
There's so much to do or say without repeating
So why don't we?
And don't expect too much, okay?
Cause the best, the worst might have passed anyway
And like the light house we watched it spin 'round and 'round
There's just some things
They aren't meant to touch the ground
Bada ba bada ba bada bum bum...
One
Of The Shareholder
A dance, a bid, a matinee
It's a faint, a brief, affinity
It's a touch, when it shouldn't be
But it's all right
And it's a step but you're too quick to fall
Now a crash but it's just physical
Not a point, 'cept it's natural
But it's all right
Uh-uh
There's no burden that will agonize you
A worry that will weigh you down
Not the memories that hypnotize you
You won't turn around
You can't love me (x4)
A regret, it's undetectable
It's a shy display, nonemotional
It's a siren, barely audible
But it's all right
And it's an angle of the paradigm
It's a cold box of cheap red wine
It's the thought that gets lost in time
But it's all right
Uh-uh
There's no burden that will agonize you
A worry that will weigh you down
Not the memories that hypnotize you
You won't turn around
You can't love me (x4)
It's a shade of what it could not be (x3)
It's a shade, a shade
There's no burden that will agonize you
A worry that will weigh you down
Not the memories that hypnotize you
You won't turn around
You can't love me (x4)
Xanax
Afraid of an airplane
Of a car swerving in the lane
Of a dark cloud too low
Of being swept away by the undertow
Of a building tumbling down
Of the train when it's underground
Of the icy mountain roads
We have to take to get to the show
There's just a time when we must all let go of that that we hold
There's just a time when we must all let go of that that we hold
With not being known, we'll have to go
Afraid when the phone rings
Another breath of life has ceased
It seems it's just lost so easily
Afraid of my heart that beats too slow
Or that I died and just didn't know
Or of a fate I will have to choose
And I'm afraid of how much I love you
There's just a time when we must all let go of that that we hold
There's just a time when we must all let go of that that we hold
With not being known, we'll have to go
It's just now that I've found a place where I can breathe
It's just now that I've found a place where I can sleep
It's just now that I've found a place where I can breathe
It's just now that I've found a place where I can sleep
It's just now that I've found a place where I can breathe
It's just now that I've found a place where I can sleep
It's just now that I've found a place where I can breathe
It's just now that I've found a place where I can sleep
Birmingham 1982
Dinner call in the late afternoon
The sun step down for the moon
Story books, night lights
And I still remember songs
Pianos sing along
And the coloured sounds of spring
Its harmony
Do you still remember?
Fireflies, four-leaf clovers
Fingerpainted skin
Where life was a reaction
And love was just laughing with a friend
Down out in the backyard stream
Make a wish for your dream
Maybe a kiss maybe a ring
And I still remember songs
The banjos sing along
And the crisp sound of fall
I still recall
Do you still remember?
Flashlights under covers
Raindrops on my tongue
When life had no distractions
And love wasn't hurting anyone
Fireflies, four-leaf clovers
Fingerpainted skin
We don't know where we're going
We'll get nowhere if we've forgotten where we've been
We'll get nowhere if we've forgotten where we've been
Speak Easy
We'll bathe in rose petals, red
And lie in violet lilac beds
And through the darkness of the night
We'll watch our future shining bright
And out of everyone I've met
It's you I can't forget
And there was a time my heart was aching
Yes there was the day I swore it was breaking
Under a lucky star our love was born brand new
And in the shadows of the night
I'll trace your silhouette in candlelight
And if you fall asleep when you rise
I'll be there to kiss your eyes
And now my heart is in your hand
So baby, understand
And there was a time my heart was aching
Yes there was the day I swore it was breaking
Under a lucky star our love was born brand new
So don't cry, Angel
I will stay the whole night through
Forevermore, I'll be loving you
And there was a time my heart was aching
Yes there was the day I swore it was breaking
Under a lucky star our love was born brand new
So don't cry, Angel
I will stay the whole night through
Forevermore, I'll be loving you
Forevermore, I'll be loving you
Hitched
Once upon a time in a place
Far, far away from here
Long, long ago
Where your eyes drift past distorted lies
And dreamed of a love to make you feel more alive
Be worth any compromise
A love that would always keep you surprised
And prove to be worth a fight
No more days too long
Pretty love songs you hum as you drive along
The same subtle note
And then you came in to say what your face already told
You said, You’d found her
And you would make her your bride
Stand by her until you died
Your tender eyes all glistened with pride
A smile so satisfied

A good start
You're one with the burden of intuition
You're one with the freedom of a blank stare
You're one with the best friend you lost you wish was still there
You're one with the dust on that old piano
You're one with the strings on your new guitar
You're one with the wind through the open window, you are
It was a faint line
That brought you here
And a pulse that kept you in time
It was the comfort of a tradition
But the fear that you were not that kind
And it's a shame now, baby, you can see yourself in
everything you're running from
And it's the same world, honey, that has brought you down
As the one that's gonna pick you up, and pick you up
You're one with the echoes of conversation
You're one with the strangers you overheard
You're one with the lesson that was the best one you learned
It was a faint line that brought you here and a pulse that kept you in time
It was the comfort of a tradition but the fear that you were not that kind
But you are
And it's a shame now, baby, you can see yourself in everything you're running
from
And it's the same world, honey, that has brought you down
As the one that's gonna pick you up, and pick you up
It was a long dark sleepy morning walk, you fell down facing up
It was a good start, it was a good start
It was a long dark sleepy morning walk, you fell down facing up
It was a good start, it was a good start
And it's a shame now, baby, you can see yourself in everything you're running
from
And it's the same world, honey, that has brought you down as the one that's
gonna pick you up
And it's a shame now, baby, you can separate yourself from where you stood
And it's the same world, honey, made you feel so bad as the one that made you
feel so good, feel so good.
Clean
getaway
I made my place by the door
I didn't know what i was waiting for
It felt just like home
Except no grass, no yard, no pictures hung
I could see across to the park
And there were friends
They were laughing hard
They looked just like my own
With no face, no name, no voice i know
I finally made it
I made a clean getaway
I finally made it
I made a clean getaway
I met someone at the bar
He had a great smile and a great heart
It felt just like love
Except no fear of losing and it wasn't tough
I finally made it
I made a clean getaway
I finally made it
I made a clean getaway
And i miss you
I miss you every single day
Smile and
wave
She's got a rich sense of style
A believable smile
I don't
She paints colors on her eyes
That cast a shadow of surprise
I don't
She doesn't know i know about it
I just smile back when she waves
I could never do the same
I could never do the same
She keeps a spotless place
She has selective taste
I don't
She'll find out where you are
She'll send you birthday cards
I won't
She doesn't know i know about it
I'll just smile back when she waves
I could never do the same
I could never do the same
She doesn't know i know about it
I just smile back when she waves
I could never do the same
I could never do the same
I could never do the same
No stars
I saw the devil in a dream
He wore a three piece suit and smiling
He promised every living thing to me
And when the land was all despair
He made water spring from everywhere
Until the black hills went back to green
And then heat was tipping
And smoke was spilling
It poured out into the street
And i was frightened by my fearlessness
To be engulfed by everything
And what i knew was left behind
There were no stars for a wish to find
And there was nothing in my clenching fist
And i just can't wait for tomorrow
Cause i will let go just as you asked me (?)
I saw the devil in a dream
He wore faded jeans and smiling
He promised every hidden thing to me
And when a soul was in despair
He'd make confetti fall from everywhere
Until the restless eyes fell back to sleep
And then minds were tipping
And thoughts were spilling
They poured out into the street
And i was frightened by my fearlessness
To drown in everything
What i knew was left behind
There were no stars for a wish to find
And there was nothing in my clenching fist
And i just can't wait for tomorrow
Cause i will let go just as you asked me (?)
What i knew was left behind
There were no stars for a wish to find
And there was nothing in my clenching fist
And i just can't wait for tomorrow
Cause i will let go just as you asked me (?)
Replay
There's some things she needs to verify
Could you bring forth an alibi
Cause she was always in between
The jury and the attorney
You give an ultimatum he will decline
And he was undecided most of the time
And he was always in between
His life and a movie scene
And the weight of our words
Is what we don't understand
Or the test in the part of every woman and every man
So with dignity and grace
Boy you'd have to erase
All the things in your mind
That replay and replay and replay and replay and replay
The things that made you cry
That you forgave, you let go by
Or you will push the one that you love out of your life
Out of your life
And there was always something she had to plan
She's always looking down in her left hand
And she was always in between
Her life and her childhood dream
And there was always something he had to mend
You give a rule
You're giving something to bend
And he was always in between
His word and what his word means
And the weight of what's heard
Is what we don't understand
Or the test in the part of every woman and every man
So with loyalty embraced
Well you'd have to sustain
All the things in your mind
That will change and will change
They will change, they will change, they will change
The things that made you lie
You want to forget and let go by
Or you will push the one that you love out of your life
Out of your life
So with dignity and grace
Boy you'd have to erase
All the things in your mind
That replay and replay
They replay, they replay, they replay
The things that made you cry
That you forgave, you let go by
Or you will push the one that you love out of your life
Out of your life, out of your life
Out of your life, out of your life
Hey hey hey
Small part
of me
The music stopped
You watch the people walk away
Your eyes reflected light that shone down
From the stained glass windowpane
Now we could talk
But the words would come out wrong
And there is no black or white
But still, we just move on
And you're never gonna be the same
From this moment you'll rise
To a height only gained by a compromise
Share the glimpse of a new beginning
And now you've changed
But just a small part of me believes this
And you will stay
But just a small part of me believes this
And for good luck,
We wear three keys to keep life prosperous
There's a looming shadow
That stands before us
And what was lost
Was the reason to believe
And the innocence and the will to retrieve it
And you're never gonna be the same
From this moment you'll rise
To a height only gained by a compromise
Share the glimpse of a new beginning
And you're never gonna be the same
From this moment you'll rise
To a height only gained by a compromise
Share the glimpse of a new beginning
And now you've changed
But just a small part of me believes this
And you will stay
But just a small part of me believes this
And just a small part of me believes this
And just a small part of me believes this
And just a small part of me believes this
Irish
goodbye
Non-stop talk
It’s eleven o’clock
There’s a line coming out the door
I’m not feeling it
But i swore i’d go
Thrift shop
Rock a little light on a cock
All the kids screaming out for more
I’m not getting it
I’d swear i’ve been here before
How can you rap
For all that sunset
The sequin still isn’t done
And i’d like to know
You get me
Third full sip (?)
Off the straight line tip
Just one now, but i want more
Another, promise me
Thrown out the door
Through a bloodshot haze
Watch the day get paid
Find a friend, ask him take me home
And could you stay awhile
Now i can’t be alone
How can you rap
For all that sunset
The sequin still isn’t done
And i’d like to know
You get me
How can you rap
For all that sunset
The sequin still isn’t done yet
I’d like to know
You get me
My own
fault
If you listen to the stream
You may get thirsty
If you watch the dying tree
You may feel weak
But don't you feel sorry
Don't you get worried
Please don't at all
Don't you take pity
It's my own fault
If you watch the t.v. Screen
You may feel hollow
If you hear the wedding vows
You may feel drunk
But don't you feel sorry
Don't you get worried
Please don't at all
Don't you take pity
It's my own fault
And there are better days
Then i’m on my way
Just follow the headlight
And don't you feel sorry
Don't you get worried
Please don't at all
Don't you take pity
It's my own fault
And no, don't you feel sorry
Don't you get worried
Please don't at all
Don't you take pity
It's my own fault
The Ballad of
Sean Foley
Fell down from your haven
To an empire cityscape
Someone asked him for directions
He would always know the way
Offer you his raincoat
Let you hide under his hat
If you can't walk from whiskey
He'll just throw you on his back
And then away you'll go
Through the crowd gathered below
To the spinning wheels
Of your mobile home
And he'll watch you sleep
Like a guardian angel
Stays inside the music
Sometimes steps outside the law
Always in the name of justice
Still believes in the lost cause
Distract you with a story
Always tries to make you laugh
He brings people together
Like Gertrude Stein and Mama Cass
And he says, "my friends are yours,
This town's full of open doors
To the sold-out shows
Eighth bungalows (?)
And the lonesome smokes
In this tiny studio"
Always finds a muse
Everywhere he goes
Whether it's the blues
Or some abandoned show tune
Learned how to be selfless
How to love what wasn't there
But never dwell upon it
Just embrace what's everywhere
People busking in the subway
MC's freestyle in the park
Heard a kid from Martha's vineyard
Made him turn around his car
And away he goes
To the local radio
Saying, "what's that sound?
I'd like to know,
And this might sound strange,
But I just can't let it go"
Guess every sinner needs a saint
Guess every sinner needs a saint
Guess every sinner needs a saint
Says everybody is the same
Lost time
I never said that it was mine
I was just holding it
If i was lonely all this time
Well, i didn't know it
And if i tried too hard
I'd probably blow it
The rest is just a guess
If it's all just luck
It was tough enough
If we lost some time
Then we'll make it up, up
I never said that it was time
I was just hoping it
If i was always on your mind
Well, you didn't show it
But when i’d shut my eyes
You'd always know it
The rest could be the best
And if it's all just luck
It was tough enough
If we lost some time
Then we'll make it up, up
And a heart that grieves
Gets lost in everything
And a heart in need
Finds hope in anything
If it's all just luck
It was tough enough
And if we lost some time
Then we'll make it up, up
If we lost some time
Then we'll make it up, up
We lost some time
Now we're making it up, up

Breathe to release
And dispel what you dream
Just be glad we can kiss
And say goodbye
And say I miss you
It's just I finally found
A place where I can breathe
It's just I finally found
A place where I can sleep
Breathe to release
And dispel what you dream
Just be glad we can kiss
And say goodbye
And say I miss you
It's just I finally found
A place where I can breathe
It's just I finally found
A place where I can sleep
It's just I finally found
A place where I can breathe
I finally found
A place where I can sleep
Hand in hand we fade away
Why, I miss you
Why, I miss you
Why, I miss you
Why, I miss you
( Aaron Neville Cover / Live 20/07/05 at the Knitting Factory in NYC )
Now if you want something to play with, go
out and find yourself a toy,
Cause little boy my time is too expensive and I'm not a little boy
So if you are serious, don't play with my heart, it makes me furious
But if you want me to love you, you know I will, you know I will
Tell it like it is.
Don't be ashamed, let your conscience be your guide
I know deep down inside of me I believe you love me
So forget your foolish pride, life is too short for sorrow
You may be here today and gone tomorrow
You might aswell get what you want
So go on and please
Tell it like it is.
I'm nothing to play with, go and find yourself a toy
Tell it like it is
Tell it like it is
The First time I ever saw your face
( Roberta Flack Cover / Live )
The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love,
To the dark and the empty skies.
The first time ever I kissed your mouth
And felt your heart beat close to mine
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command
The first time ever I lay with you
I felt the earth move in my hand
I thought our joy would fill the earth
And last 'till the end of time, my love
And last 'till the end of time
(Cyndi Lauper cover / Maria Taylor, Kristofer
Âström and Wolke / Live)
Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick
And think of you
Turning in circles
Confusion is nothing new
Flashback to warm nights
Almost left behind
Suitcases of memories
Time after
Sometimes you picture me
I'm walking too far ahead
You're calling to me
I can't hear what you've said
Then you say go slow
I fall behind
The second hand unwinds
If you're lost, you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
Time after time
After my picture fades and darkness
Has turned to gray
Watching through windows
I'm wondering If you're OK
And you say go slow
I fall behind
The drums beats out of time
If you're lost, you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
Time after time
Time after time
Time after time
Time after time
Time after time
